Adventures in Bird Watching: Best Trip Destinations

For amateur and skilled "birding" enthusiasts, a bird watching vacation is a thrilling recreational activity usually planned as an
opportunity to observe a new species or to follow a migration or mating season. There are numerous birding destinations around the world.

For instance, the lower Rio Grande valley and the pine forests of East Texas are considered to be the best sites for bird watching in Texas. Texas is the only state that is home to three-fourths of the birds native to the United States thanks to the state's wide diversity of ecosystems. With an average rainfall of 8 inches in extreme West Texas to 55 inches and above in East Texas, the state is home to every avian species from water fowl to birds of prey and a massive variety of "song" birds.

Bird watching tours are popular throughout the state and in micro-climates like that present in the Lost Maples State Park, birders can even see relatively rare species like the Golden Cheeked Warbler. Because bird watching enthusiasts keep life lists of birds observed, the opportunity to see a species and "check it off" is attractive to hardcore birders.

Some Typical Birding Vacation Packages and Destinations

With the wide variety of bird watching trips available it is impossible to touch on all the potential areas. Costa Rica Expeditions, for instance, offers seven-day jungle canal exploration and highland birding for groups of at least two. You will have an opportunity for tropical and ocean bird watching and the company offers numerous site specific packages. Of course these are exotic destinations requiring considerable travel and little luxury on the other end. They are not appropriate for the casual birdwatcher or for those who expect to sit down with their binoculars and casually observe birds that flutter into close proximity.

Within the United States, Joshua Tree National Park in California and. Bear Mountain State Park in New York are popular birding destinations as are most state and national parks and designated wildlife areas. It's a good idea to sit down with your bird guide book and figure out what species you'd like to see. This way when you do sit down with your travel agent, you will have zeroed in on a geographic area of concentration.

If you're on a tight budget, a trip to a national park or wildlife preserve is easily a "do it yourself" vacation. Once at the park or nature preserve, park rangers and staff can direct you to areas where you are most likely to observe birds. All such facilities have web pages that list the wildlife common within their boundaries. Just use your favorite search engine and enter the name of the park or preserve in which you are interested.
