Basic Bird Watching Gear

Bird watching is an economical and interesting recreational activity requiring little more than an understanding of a few bird watching basics.
The hobby of birdwatching is different from the scientific study or birds, which is called ornithology, in that bird watching is undertaken purely for pleasure. Still, enthusiasts who outfit themselves with bird watching gear (principally binoculars) and set out to observe various species and their behavior quickly learn a great deal about these fascinating and beautiful creatures.

People can bird watch almost anywhere -- in national parks, in one's own backyard, or along the shorelines. No matter the location, a bird watcher needs some minimal equipment that may include:
Binoculars
Binoculars are regarded as one of the indispensable bird watching devices. An ideal binocular should offer a moderate field of view with at least 8x magnifying power. The objective lens should be 30 millimeters. Although not absolutely essential, it is desirable to select waterproof binocular with lens coating and armoring.
Field Guide/ Guide Book
Field guides assist birders in identifying the different species they spot and often serve as a place to keep "life lists," a record of all the birds one individual has observed in their bird watching career. A number of guide books are available, with the Peterson's and Audubon series considered to be the standards. While the organization of various guide books differs, all offer high quality illustrations, verbal descriptions of a bird's markings and behaviors, and silhouette identification charts.
Notebook
Each birder has a different method of keeping records of their sightings or of making notations on an unusual bird to assist with later identification. It's usually a good idea to carry a small notebook into the field even if you plan to transfer the information to a more permanent bird watching journal later on.
Clothing
Clothing should be informal and comfortable. Long trousers and hiking boots should be worn especially in grassy areas where snakes could be present. Heavy walking shoes will suffice for less rugged terrain. Use of a sun screen and insect repellant is recommended.

With these bird watching basics even absolute beginners should be prepared for a day in the field. Obviously if you are going on specialized birding tours in more exotic regions, for instance the South American rain forests, you will need different equipment. Always check with the tour company for the required equipment before heading out on a special excursion.
