Tips to Building a Backyard AviaryIf you are an avid bird feeder or a bird owner, the next step may be to take your hobby to the next level - bird aviaries.Tips for Building and Setting Up a Basic Backyard AviarySetting up a backyard aviary requires a minimal degree of carpenter skills. Before beginning any "do it yourself" project make sure you have all the tools and materials you will need. If possible, get a friend to help you since some of the work is a "two-handed" job.Draw Up A PlanDrawing up a plan to scale before you begin to work is important so that you will have a guide and a means of estimating the tools and materials you will need. Remember to plan for a vestibule (a double door system of entry with an intervening chamber) to minimize potential bird escapes.Start With A Simple StructureIn the beginning choose a relatively simple structure that will allow for future expansion. By starting small you can ensure that tending an aviary is really something you want to do. You can use treated pine poles as framework and select aviary netting with a mesh small enough to prevent the birds from escaping.Secure the FoundationA critical step in constructing your aviary is to bury your mesh at least six inches deep and bend the wire at opposing right angles to discourage predators from digging. Many backyard creatures including raccoons can wreak havoc in your aviary. If you live in an area with a large number of nocturnal wild animals, you may want to go a step farther and make a concrete foundation. Though more expensive, it will be easier to clean and maintain and it is more secure.Provide for Shade and WaterYou can use an open mesh for the roof but make sure you provide the birds with adequate shade and water. Birds love running water so you may consider including a garden fountain in your outdoor aviary cages to give your birds some place to splash around and drink. Shade and water are essentially to help protect your birds from extreme heat.Continue to : Ideal Guidelines to Build Your Own Aviary Related ArticlesChoosing the Best Bird CageParrots: More than Pets, Lifetime Commitments Basic Tips to Bird Houses Top Ten Health and Care Issues in Pet Birds |
